I remember my grandfather as the head of my family back in India. Women, for the most part, live in subordination. In the upper class families women don’t work out side the house. The only time a woman works outside the house is when her labor power is need to maintain the household. Just because women stay at home doesn’t mean they assume responsibility as a house wife. In fact, the majority of the families who can afford it have servants to do the daily choirs. Everyone in a household are expected to share everything in the house. Property is usually signed under the head of the household. No single individual owns anything, instead everyone owns all. The family functions as a whole. All the income that comes in the house is handled by who ever is head. This style of living is different from the American style of live. Hear in America, I found that although like in India, family is important to each individual, however after a certain time, every person, desires to moves out and start hisher own life, and take control of it. Not everyone lives this life style but this is what the American culture proposes to its people, which is totally different from what the Indian culture proposes. Hear in America, women desire to be more independent, and are free to do whatever she desire. The average American woman desires to go out into the real world and hold a position of power. Where the average Indian woman is told to take care and watch the house and the people in it. Growing up where the cultures are so different, I had to find common grounds for my self.
