The reasons humans forget

Repression is unconsciously pushed down memories. The human brain will often go through a mental process that will automatically hide information that is emotionally upsetting. It is the brain’s way of trying to protect us from painful memories. For example, repression is very common in sexual abuse or assault cases. The abuse was a source of pain for the person, and so the brain does its best to shield the person from the emotional pain remembering the abuse may cause. It does so by hiding the memories in a place where we can forget about it, so that we are saved from the emotional distress that these memories might bring.
