Today, stadiums and concert halls are still set up like this. The seats are close to determining where you are in society to. Since the front seats cost more money and the higher seats cost less. If you have the money to spend, then you can get front seats (movie theatres are an exception). Also, if you have the money, then you are considered wealthy and in the upper tier of society.
