...ired reading they replied “ A university has the responsibility to open students eyes to the Muslim religion and culture”. Public colleges should not necessarily make their readings required but recommended readings. The Koran is a very controversial book to have required for reading especially when the country is in emotional distress about the religion and people whom these students are reading about. When the college first thought of what book to give for their required reading, they should have been aware of the potential risks. First they should have put into account about what had just happened to our country, the time of 9/11, and the hostility that the American people were having toward the Muslim religion. Also the fact that The Koran is similar to the Muslim bible, it’s what the people live and die by in the Muslim religion. The Koran might have been a little much for the students to consider at the time. Many took into consideration that the school was not trying to change the students views on God and what they themselves believe in, but to require a text about another religion and not give students a few selections is something I think the school should have taken into consideration. While attending a public high school my history teacher was an extreme democrat. Our topics in the class were very touchy, ones that many arguments arose to which actual verbal fights would break out. I realized one day that there was something wrong with this picture in my classroom. My teacher was attempting to teach us through her beliefs and morals, and many people in the class were becoming offended, myself included. I do not disagree with the discussion of politics in schools however, I do disagree on the teacher sharing her personal opinions and putting down the opposing views. Debates in class can be a very intellectual discussion I just think my teacher was going to far by interjecting with her own opinions. Since she is the teacher her doing this minimized the view of the opposing side. Now on the other hand, I have also attended a private Catholic college. ...
