John was given the chance to be set free if he would confess to witchcraft, but instead he stuck to what he believed and was hung for it. Proctor gave up his name in an effort to stop these witch trials, he realizes that the whole ordeal is false and wants it stopped. Not only is he the only person brave enough to step against the court, but he has witnessed Abigal saying that she's making up these accusations. He not only wants to save his wife, but also his friends in the village that are going to be hung. At the end of the movie, he has a chance to go free, to sign his name, agreeing that he practices witchcraft. But he realizes, that by not giving the court what they want, they will lose their power, and will not be able to continue with their trials. He saves lives, by giving up his own. Reverend Hale also comes into play in all this. Hale acts very stuck up at first and acts like he is god's gift to the world. He believes that he knows all about witches and knows one when he sees one. Throughout the next few acts Hale starts to realize that he may have made a mistake about all the people he had put to death. When proctor is sentenced to hanging Hale gets so fustrated with how far the ordeal has been taken and he states, " I denounce these precedings, I quit this court". Hale opens up and sees his mistakes. Hale is the only other person who sticks up for Procter and his wife. Since the beginning Hale has been paying close attention to these trials, and after hearing what John Procter had to say, has decided that he no longer believes the accusations of Abigal Williams. The only problem is, he has no power left in the court, things have gotten out of hand and the only thing he is able to do is try and save Proctor's life by having him tell a lie.
