Teenage Stereotyping
...the back of his police cruiser. The officer then proceeds to search your car for twenty minutes and finds nothing. You think it is now over but the officer gets back in the police cruiser and calls for the K-9 unit to come and search your car. When the dog finally gets there it searches your car and finds nothing again. The officer lets you go and says be on your way boys, and all this happens just because you are a teenager. This type of prejudice against teens happens daily because the media leads people to believe teenagers are all smoking marijuana, on cocaine, or any other drugs. When in reality many teens do not even touch drugs. Most teens today are more worried about school and their future than drugs. Generally teenagers have weighed the consequence of drug use and have realized it is just not worth it. The media needs to stop portraying teenagers as drug addicted, hopeless young adults and see the realty of the situation. Lazy teenagers comes from the media outlook of teens. When reading the comics in today’s paper an image is created. This image is of a lazy teenager who cares for nothing more than to sit on the couch all day playing video games, talking on the phone, eating potato chips or just watching television.. The media makes an image of teenagers wanting the world to come to them; that teens think do not have to work to get what they want. When in actuality teenagers work very hard for the things they have like clothes, their cars, cell phones or any luxury. Lazy, couch potato teenagers is a sad lie. I work at McDonalds and have worked there for fourteen months. During the summer, I worked a forty-five hour work week making food, cleaning the store, or any thing that needed to be done. I worked so hard my boss took notice and at first she just gave me a fifty cent raise. Then towards the middle of summer she promoted me to a swing manager where I managed the shift, lead the grill team or any job needed. The idea that teens are lazy is a ridiculous notion not based by facts. Teenage violence is a common misconception. Teenage time bomb is what comes to peoples mind when they think of adolescence. The media scare campaign from USA Toady, CNN, or any other media source declares violence is natural to teenagers and coming mayhem is inevitable. Teenagers are given a bad reputation by a small number of young adult who commit these violent crimes like school shootings, murder, or robbery. Teens now go to school wearing uniforms because some people think it will eliminate “clicks” therefore eliminate violence. Teens in reality are not violent people and are just as calm as many adults. Teenager’s go out in their community and help people, clean rivers, or collect food for food drives. Teenage vio...
