This man is nasty, arrogant, and racist, but Sister Helen is a servant of God and helps him. She is compassionate towards Mathew Poncelot, and realizes his pain. For instance, in one statement Mathew says, “Thank you for loving me.” In another statement he says, “Sister, you’re all I’ve got.” He appreciates all of the love and compassion she gives to him. Sister Helen Prejean is also compassionate towards the victim’s relatives. These people tell her, “We just want simple justice for our unbearable loss.” Sister Helen wants to abolish the death penalty and believes killing is wrong. However, she understands all of the grief that the Percys and the Delecroixes are going through. She measures their grief as immeasurable.
