As the residence of the governor general, Rideau hall is known as a place of dignity, grace and a lot of tradition. Every governor general in Canada has lived there since confederation, exceptional Canadians are honored and world leaders and visitors from all around the world are welcomed. The governor general recognizes the achievements of exceptional Canadians with honors, decorations for bravery and service, and awards. The focus of the honors system is the Order of Canada, which was recognized in 1967 to mark Canada’s Centennial. Canadians are honored for excellent lifetime service in a variety of fields. Well-known recipients range from astronaut, authors, actors, and even cancer activist Terry Fox. The Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award was created in 1996 to honor Canadian caregivers and volunteers. Canadians citizens are encouraged to visit Rideau hall. The grounds are open every day from 8 AM to one hour before sunset year round. Visitors are welcome to enjoy the grounds, with a picnic area and play structure for children.
