... great men. Stealing, lying and denial become the Loman way, allowing the men to truly believe that they are great. The play shows that they are not great men, and how honesty is not a big part of the Loman’s life. Charley and Bernard, the Loman’s neighbors, are examples of reaching for and achieving the American dream. The Loman’s are the opposite example. Reaching for, but never quite achieving the dream. Willy childishly dislikes Bernard, Charley’s son, because he considers him a nerd. Yet this nerd becomes a successful lawyer, arguing cases in front of the Supreme Court. What does Biff, Willy’s oldest son become, a 35 year old nomadic loser, jumping from one job to another. As his mother Linda says in the beginning of the play, “I don’t know, I think he’s still lost, Willy, I think he’s very lost”, act 1 page 16.
