The excerpt from “the custom house” is about the narrator talking about his ancestors. The line “It still haunts me, and induces a sort of home-feeling to the past…” shows how the narrator had a negative life at home because he is saying that being haunted is giving him a homely feeling. In this paragraph the narrator also compares good to evil. He talks about an ancestor who he believed to be good and evil. He says “With his bible and sword”, which are two things related to opposite forces of good and evil. He calls him “a man of war and peace” and even says “he had all the Puritanic traits, both good and evil”. The last line the narrator says “I, the present writer, as their representative, herby take shame upon myself for their sakes…”. The narrator is taking the blame ...
