...s raped. But some times the birthmother is forced by family or partner to abort. There are two types of procedures used to perform abortion. The first method is called surgical abortion. The second is the non-surgical or the medical abortion. These are the steps doctors take to perform surgical abortion. * A machine operated by suction, gently empties the uterus. * In most cases you will be given medication for several hours prior to the procedure to help open the cervix. * Initially the cervix and vagina is cleaned with an antiseptic. * The physician will inject a local anesthetic into or near your cervix. * The entrance of the cervix is then gently opened with dilators. * A plastic suction curette is inserted into the uterus. The suction machine is turned on. * The uterus is then carefully emptied by suction. *As you can see in Picture A, a suction machine is used to remove all of the tissue. * In some cases curettage with a spoon shaped instrument might be performed to ensure removal of all of the tissue. A surgical abortion takes about 5 to 10 minutes. Picture A Medical abortion involves several steps and requires at least two medical visits. During the first visit, the pregnancy is confirmed. After the woman makes a decision to have a medical abortion, she will have a quick, physical exam and take the first medication (mifepristone). The second medication (misoprostol) is inserted into the vagina either at home or in the office I to 2 days later. The abortion usually occurs within 4 hours after inserting the second drug, but it can take 24 hours or longer. In very few cases, the woman may need to return to the office for another dose of medication. A final visit is required within the next 2 weeks for a checkup.
