...y. Darkness is everywhere and it is pervading the poet ‘s life. It is “black as the Pit from pole to pole.” There seems to be no way out and the poet is trapped and tortured in that inimical darkness. Through the use of metaphor and such strong and descriptive words – for instance, “bludgeonings of chance”, “wrath and tears”, “ horror of the shade”, etc – the poet is showing how painful the agony he is suffering is. He is now like a prey waiting to be eaten, like a prisoner waiting for his punishments. His situation is completely dark. However, the poem is lit up brightly by his “unconquerable soul “ which makes him determined and optimistic. He has never “winced” or “cried aloud” now matter what happens, even when he fails to “clutch” the circumstance. “The menace of the year, finds and shall never find him unafraid.” Therefore, in his...
