Billy is seen dancing to the song “I was dancing when I was twelve” This song emphasises the love for dance Billy has. Dancing is Billy’s passion. He longs to be a professional ballet dancer. The film shows that Billy will do anything in his power to become a dancer. He perseveres. Billy Elliot again shows the idea of growing up through his undying passion and determination for ballet. When Billy’s father finds out Billy exchanged boxing for feminine ballet, his anger is obvious – “Lads do football, or boxing, or wrestling, not frigging ballet!” and he proceeds to forbid Billy from further participation despite the fact that Billy is extremely talented. Billy finds a way to take free, private, secret lessons with Mrs Wilkinson (Julie Walters) the teacher. Billy shows ‘growing up’ because his initiative and determination were only present due to his mature outlook on life. This is important because without growing up, Billy would have given up ballet entirely and settled for staying in his futureless life. Hew knew his path to escape misery was through ballet so he took it. Growing up is again showen by acceptance Billy has for his best friend Michael’s homosexuality. Michael’s sexuality was discovered when Billy found Michael cross dressing and applying makeup. Billy kindly accepted this and felt that it made no change in their friendship. When Michael and Billy dared to explore Billy’s sexuality, Billy did so without upsetting his friend.
