Furthermore Roger Gosden argues that “imagine the reaction there would be if organ transplantation was prohibited because people found it ‘unnatural’ ”. These arguments are all very fair; however, many people believe that because we can do something doesn’t necessarily mean we should do it. Also many people may become carried away with correcting perfectly healthy and happy babies. There could also be unintended defects such as damaging the human gene pool and maybe in the extreme case creating a superior race of humans. This may sound farfetched but many consider that this is not far off the truth. But one of the greatest protests against designer babies comes from religious reasons. Religions such as Christianity believe aborting a foetus or tampering with an embryo, either inside the womb or out is murder in the eyes of God. Many countries have a full ban against all human cloning and designing. These include India and Japan. However in the U.S they have only placed light regulations on the projects. Only limited government money is spent on all that related research. However, private funding is acceptable but only in a few states. Yet in the European council they are planning and ratifying a complete ban. In the U.K things are different. There are very little laws concerned designer babies and public knowledge of the issue is less than extensive. Many debates have taken place, especially in the UK due to the cloning success of Dolly the sheep who was the first successfully cloned farm animal. Another related subject is GM foods. If there are GM foods in shops and GM mice in laboratories some claim that logically humans will be next. Reproductive technology is now a $2bn-a-year industry, and an estimated 11,000 kids a year born after IVF treatment. But how much is a perfect baby worth? Many people feel babies are priceless however with infertility specialists making about $625,000 a year (which makes them the highest paid doctors, beating even plastic surgeons by over $100000 a year.) can only the rich have perfect kids?
