...ts. Okonkwo the main character from the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe constantly looks back on his past and the lifestyle he once lived. Okonkwo’s father was not a very motivated man when it came to money. As a result during Okonkwo’s childhood he never lived a very comfortable lifestyle. His family was seen as one always in debt and constantly asking for food. Okonkwo did not agree with this lifestyle and was more or less ashamed of his past and his father’s way of life. Due to this negative feeling Okonkwo had for his father and their lifestyle, Okonkwo decided to work hard and accept nothing but the best. With time Okonkwo had accomplished everything he wanted, appearing as a man of higher class in their village. Once he had accomplished this point in his life Okonkwo seemed much more thankful for his earnings and to the people that helped him. Also when hard times came Okonkwo seemed to overcome them with a lot less stress than the others of the village such as when he was exempt from the village for 7 years. Okonkwo still seemed to overcome this obstacle that many would fail at and once again created a decent lifestyle. This event that Okonkwo overcame resulted in gratitude of his lifestyle. At the same time Okonkwo constantly wanted to accomplish more and this resulted in his downfall as well. These qualities are similar to those of Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Gatsby, the main character in The Great Gatsby has lived a life similar to Okonkwo’s. He grew up in a lower class and because of this he was not allowed the same respect as a person from a higher class.
