...n, but they had to provide for them. The parents were tolerant to his behavior; they just taught he is different. Chris started to disrespect his parents at a very young age. Chris was never punished when he’d done something wrong. For example, Chris misappropriated his sisters’ dog, or ‘“he intentionally try to get [his co-students] lost.”’(112) He’s done only what he wanted. Later his arrogance turned to hatred, “portraying [his parents] as unreasonable tyrants” (115) or saying for his mom ‘“she must be fucking nuts.”’(125) ‘“He would have been unhappy with any parents”’ (115) because he ‘“didn’t like being told what to do”’ (115), which is called stubbornness. Stubbornness leads to misunderstood pride. When the second time Alex worked for Westerberg and Wayne needed people, he refused to help his friend; concerned only for his Alaska odyssey. Almost anybody who Chris met in his life tried to help by giving him the right advice, but he ignored it. McCandless was absolutely sure he was going in the right direction, but he needed a phone to call Ron to come pick him up, post office to care his mail, store to buy supplies, and later mother to cry for. The misunderstood conception of the ‘poisonous civilization’ he so much tried to flee from is the best expression of his egocentricity. Alex had done everything possible for pursuing a mysterious ego of existence. In the last two years he rejected his real name, his normal life, his family, running from everybody who loved him,‘“[came] to the final and greatest adventure…[he] [walked]… in the wild”’(163) and not longer after he tried to return to civilization. Finally, Chris understood ‘“Death looms as a serious threat.’” (195) and to overcome it without ‘“spiritual equipment…and the basic elements of [it] are in the Gospels.’”(187), was impos...
