“Students Collapse Psychologically and Emotionally”
...angry, frustrated, stressed, which can lead to emotional collapse since people convince themselves that they should be “better than others.” In other words, students loose their temper, yell, scream or even go crazy. For example, in Odessa, the place where I was born, I used to know one guy who was unbelievably clever but he thought that he needed to be more intelligent as his roommate was much brighter in his opinion. For that reason, he worked hard all the time and studied more and more. Time passed and he got a serious psychological disorder characterized by loss of contact with reality. He convinced himself that he was the professor and was in charge of the college. Every day he went to the college (even though he had already been removed) with a huge backpack and returned home like everything was normal. As a result, I believe that instead of being victims of peer or self-induced pressures, we need to value our health, not compete excessively with others and instead of studying all the time, take a breath, make some herbal tea and enjoy the desired break. Along with peer and self-induced pressures goes parental pressure. Parents want their child be a principle person in the near future. Therefore, being motivated by money and material things, parents tell their children to graduate in “rich” fields (for example, doctors, lawyers or business managers) but for which they may not have a genuine interest. “I see many students taking pre-medical courses with joyless tenacity. They go off their labs as if they were going to the dentist”(Zinsser 142). For that reason, we shouldn’t be shocked when we see doctors or lawyers working without passion and concentration. Also, there are more examples of parental pressure. For example, wanting their child to reach Harvard’s standard, parents concentrate on their child’s grades and become dictators instead of being friends. “One part of [students] feels obligated to fulfill their parents’ expectations ”(Zinsser 142). This means that the child thinks that the only way he can earn the respect and to fulfill parents’ expectations is to bring home good grades. What frightens me that this pressure can be deadly. For example, there was a case with an eighteen years old honors student. He stood up in the middle of his English class and shot himself. He did this because he was given a notice, which was to be signed by his parents, saying that he was doing badly in his class. Therefore, I believe that parents instead of checking and cursing children when they get bad grades or putting them in “rich” fields, should help their children to find something that they really enjoy learning and make that their career, because nowadays people keep learning all their lives if they want to stay up in their fields. In addition, I believe that everyone needs to live his/her own life and to pursue his/her own goals. Also, with a parental pressure is deeply intertwined economic pressure as parents encourage their children to work and help to support the family but they do not think about undesirable consequences. “Nor can I blame them. They live in a brutal economy”(Zinsser 141). “T...
