Population Decrease in Hungary

During mid1980’s, USSR began to lose control of its satellite states and was thinking about transition of power in Hungary. Since early 1980’s all democratic parties and revolutionary groups have shared the ambition of taking Hungary into the standards of other European Countries and joining NATO. Foreign ownership of land and investment in Hungarian firms are widespread, with cumulative foreign direct investment totaling more than $23 billion since 1987. Hungary has made the transition from a centrally planned to a market economy, with a per capita income one-half that of the Big Four European nations after break of Soviet Union (http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/hu.html). All this factors led to increase in migration of population from rural areas to cities in search of jobs and better life. The decrease in Total Population happened simultaneously due to the ageing process of the population. At the end of 1990 the ratio of children under 15 years was 20.5 % compared to 25.3 % in late1970’s. However, the proportion of persons over 65 years (senior citizens) was 13.3 % compared to 10.2 % during 1970’s. At the end of 1990 only 61.2% of the adult population over age of 14 years was married, while in 1970’s their ratio was 72.1 %.
