This assured that the elections were bent towards the protestant side. Catholics were badly paid and low-salary employments, so they could not afford to own properties. Most of the difficulties came from unemployment. As stated in source A of “10,000 workers in a Belfast shipyard…just 400 are Catholics.” This shows that most big companies were discriminating against Catholics and were owned by Protestants. The religion became a great issue and was brought up in many conversations and decisions. Catholics were semi-skilled or unskilled and couldn’t get better jobs than they had, most high standard jobs were given to Protestants. Protestants had a special relationship with schools to make sure that their children got the right education and that they got to university. Some universities in Northern Ireland were exclusively for Protestants. Catholics were too poor to carry on in school and get a higher education. Some Catholics did get to university but then they left the country. Source D shows the conditions Catholics lived in. while protestants lived comfortably in beautiful houses, Catholics lived in dirt, their houses were overcrowded and everyone lived on top of each other.
