L is B’s pawn. He is an easy target for B’s warped propaganda due to his immature and naïve character. Adding to this naivety is his loneliness, distorted sense of identity and his inquisitiveness into the controversy concerning Felix stockx. Taking into consideration that there are no adult authorities in his life, he is subject to be easily manipulated by B’s opinions which also appeals to the majority of characters in the novel. Lucas is a lonely naïve teenage boy seemingly without an identity. His age reflects his immaturity in which values and opinions are subject to change and be influenced by peers. As Caitlain suggest, he is “a disaffected young man…who has no money and no love and he wants to belong!” This need to belong leads him to search for a person to identify himself with, someone who shares his ideas so that he could have a sense of belonging and not failure. As a result, his loneliness adds to his vulnerability to associate with anyone that is appealing to him. Furthermore other factors of L’s character tempted B such as his impulsiveness and confusion as shown at the gun shop, “it made me nervous.
