To try and make the sentence faster he tried to commit suicide twice by over dosing on drugs and at the same time his girlfriend tried to do it to but was not successful and after put in a mental hospital. Gilmore spent 18 of his last 21 years in prison. Gilmore’s trial was very famous because he wanted to speed up the process. The date first set for his execution was 15 November 1976 but Gary did not decided not to appeal against his sentence. For some reason his execution was delayed two months. When he spoke to his lawyers he demanded the sentence be carried out immediately. The courts let Gary Gilmore chose what way he wanted the death penalty carried out and he chose the firing squad. On 17 of January 1977 at 8:08 am the sentence was carried out by the state of Utah. Nicole Baker the girl friend came and saw the execution.
