...ily relationships is lies in the lives of the Ewells. The lives the Ewell are miserable because of the terrible family connection. Bob Ewell has no respect for his children at all. He rapes his own daughter Mayella, (Lee, 221) abuses her and blames it on Tom Robinson in the trial. (Lee, 198) Mayella fears her father greatly. She slanders during the trial of Tom Robinson because her father forces her to do so. (Lee, 205) Mayella does not know what Atticus means when he says “Ma’am” and thinks he is insulting her. (Lee, 207) Bob Ewell wastes lots of the money in his family on drinking and that is why he has a bad temper. (Lee, 34) That proves that he never cares for his children, which means that he does not care about his relationship between him and his children. Therefore, the only feeling his children have toward him is fear and hatred. In addition, Burris Ewell, as a member of the Ewells, treats his teacher Miss Caroline badly. (Lee, 30) This confirms that there is no respect from his father or he will not behave the way he does. The good type of family relationship in this novel is demonstrated through the relationship between the Finches. The Finch family is an example of an excellent family relationship. Jem, as another member of the Finch family, also demonstrates his excellent relationship with his sister because he cares for her so much. When Bob Ewell attacks Jem and Scout, Jem risks his life and tries to save his sister. (Lee, 300) Atticus, the only parent for his children Jem and Scout, is the biggest reason why they have such an outstanding family relationship. When Jem, Scout and Dill are playing a game about the Radleys, Atticus just told them to stop and leaves with the trust that they will not do it again. (Lee, 45) This proves that Atticus not only treat his children well and have a good relationship with them as his children, but also as normal trustworthy people. In addition, Atticus allows his children to call him by his first name, which is not common in Maycomb at all. (Lee, 115) This indicates Atticus make his children feel like they are equal beings on top of father, daughter and son. After Bob Ewell attacks Jem and Scout, Atticus, Aunt Alexandra and Scout are worried greatly. (Lee, 302) Atticus stays with Jem the entire night because he was concerned about Jem and wants to be there when Jem wakes...
