Expensive clothing and flashy jewelry usually indicates that a person has or makes a decent amount of money. A well-kept appearance (i.e. hygiene and hairstyle) can also be indicative of a higher social class. When assessing another person’s social class, I automatically compare the way the person looks in comparison to me. As a part of the working class, my typical wardrobe for work is a pair of slacks, boots, and a button-down oxford shirt. When encountering an individual that is dressed similar, I tend to categorize them as working class as well. I believe this is probably true for most people. We know ourselves and our own social class and instinctively base our comparison using our own looks as the example. If presented with the option to ask a person one question to determine their social class, I would most definitely ask them how much money they average in a year.
