Discuss how Shakespeare has developed the character of Lord Capulet in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ to influence the action, illustrate themes of the play and add interest to the drama.
...e, her mother was married, so this shows at the time many people got married at a young age. Here it shows Capulet is caring and is protective of his daughter from his actions and decisions. This scene clearly states it is about parenthood. Capulet looks out for what Juliet wants and from this Shakespeare shows Capulet is a caring father. In act 1, scene 5, Capulet returns to his aggressive side. In this scene, the Capulets have arranged a party which many people have arrived to. Capulet shows he is welcoming, enthusiastic and ready to have a good time. We know he is enthusiastic and ready to have a good time because he encourages his guests to dance. During the party, Tybalt comes to Capulet explaining that Romeo is at the Capulets’ party. Here we see Capulet is tolerant with Romeo which he knows is a Montague. He tells Tybalt “I would not for the wealth of all this town Here in my house do him disparagement.” Capulet has only heard good of Romeo and believes he will not be a threat to them, but when Tybalt answers back to Capulet, he shows his temper and rage. He says “You must contrary me?” In this Capulet also shows his personality through the fact that he does not like younger people undermining his authority. Through this scene, Tybalt shows the theme hatred as he wants to do something about Romeo being at the party. When Tybalt dies, his death alters everything. In act3, scene 4 Capulet is impulsive. He accepts the marriage proposal from Paris for Juliet. He changes his attitude towards Juliet. Earlier in act 1, scene 2 Capulet says he will let his daughter Juliet choose whom she wants to marry. In this scene we see a change in Capulet’s character. He says, “I think she will be ruled In all respects by me;” He believes he needs to take charge to take charge as the head of the family whereas before he believed in what Juliet would want and maybe we should not trust what he had said earlier. In this scene we also see that Capulet and Juliet do not have a close relationship because he sends his wife Lady Capulet to speak to her about the wedding. Also we have not seen Juliet and Capulet speak to each other at all so far in the play. Back then you would not expect a child in a rich family to be close with their parents because they were raised by a nurse. This scene adds interest and tension to the whole plot as we know that Juliet is already married to Romeo and this builds tension because it makes the audience wonder how Juliet will get herself out of this dilemma. The next scene act3, scene 5, Capulet loses his temper with Juliet when she says she does not want to get married. In this scene he shows how bad-tempered he can be. This scene develops Capulet’s character further. He uses harsh insults at Juliet such as, “Green-sickness carrion.” He gets furious in this scene. Capulet says, “And you be not, hang, beg, starve, die in the streets.” His anger is shown through this and you would expect this because of what he said in the previous scene. Capulet is a different person from who we thought he was before. In act 1, scene 2 he showed he cared for his daughter and was protective of her, whereas here Capulet is saying he does not care if she starves or dies. Shakespeare adds interest and tension builds in this scene through seeing how much rage Capulet can get into and also whether Juliet will tell her father that she is married to Romeo. This scene illustrates parenthood because Capulet wants to take charge and here he is demanding and forcing Juliet to get married to Paris. In act 4, scene 2 Capulet does not care about what Juliet feels or wants and prepares for the wedding. While preparing Juliet returns from Friar Lawrence’s cell and tells her father that she will get married to Paris. Capulet likes things going his way and from hearing the good news he is ecstatic. He says “My heart is wondrous light.” This shows how happy he is and because he ...
