...inent arrival of Marco and Rodolpho, the illegal immigrants. Eddie tells how Vinny ‘ratted’ on his own uncle who was living illegally in his household. He offers Catherine some words of wisdom, saying, ‘Just remember, kid, you can quicker get back a million dollars that was stole than a word that you gave away.’ This quote reveals the irony and madness of Eddie's character. He too chooses to go against community values in favour of stale law, when he informs the Immigration Bureau of the whereabouts of Rodolpho and Marco. Eddie is so strongly against betrayal that his transition to the betrayer seems strange, illogical. We can fully appreciate this foreshadowing moment in the play when it becomes apparent that Eddie has undergone a complete breakdown and his self destructive madness makes us realize that the transition Miller has set up is in fact, by the climax of the play, logical. Driven by his love of his niece Catherine, Eddie resorts to desperate measures, even going as far as attempting to get Rodolpho (to whom Catherine is engaged) arrested for being ‘not right’ that is to say, homosexual. This results in conflict with Alfieri, who he was discussing his suspicions with. Eddie becomes furious at Alfieri when he insists that there is nothing he can do legally about his suspicions of Rodolpho’s sexuality. Alfieri, however, coolly deals with him. When Eddie exits, Alfieri tells his audience, ‘His eyes were like tunnels; my first thought was that he had committed a crime, but soon I saw it was only a passion that had moved into his body, like a stranger.’ This quotation shows that Alfieri views Eddie as an obsessive beast. Connotations of the passion moving into his body are paranormal, dark and perhaps even demonic. This is true to a point as well, as the passion Alfieri describes could be referring to his incestuous love of Catherine. This important quotation also gives us an idea of how Alfieri views Eddie Carbone. He tells his story as if Eddie is a legend. He is described by Alfieri dramatically which is unusual in the drama form. It is clear that Alfieri respects Eddie and is in dismay at his downfall, even though he perhaps envisaged it. One of the most interesting and juicy conflicts in the play is between Eddie and Rodolpho. Rodolpho is Eddie’s main threat in the play, as he is engaged to be married to Catherine. Eddie never warms to Rodolpho after they break their news, and, in fact, grows to loathe and despise him without proper reason. Eddie has convinced himself and o...
