However hope is dimmed when grandfather said that ¡§The light is still not moving,¡¨ (Macleod, Page.159). The pathos is increased with grandmother¡¦s hope that ¡§Perhaps they¡¦re resting,¡¨(Macleod, page. 158). and the words as came to the windows and said ¡§The other light blew out and they¡¦re trying to get it started,¡¨ (Macleod, Page. 159). Macleod used their conversation, to increase the hope for their family; however, it also increased the pathos in the fear that they fell through the ice. At the end of the story, the reader learns that they all died; there was no hope for them to survive under the icy water. The conversations between the grandparents were rushed and excited, but it also brought out the pathos where there were no hope. After few years of the accident, the story is not finished, and the pathos returns through the use of flashback. The twin sisters now were in Grade XI and they read a poem which had the familiar to their experience. The poem also takes place in the winter, in a scene where footmarks were left on the snow, ¡§And further there were none!¡¨(Macleod, Page.160). Both twins looked at each other and the memories flashed back to March 28. The line of the poem brought back the sad memories for the twins as they were three and innocently playing store at the grandparent¡¦s house when they both did not understand the sadness of the situation. But years later, they have a greater understanding of the tragedy of that sad day. The use of flashback reminds the twin and the reader of the pathos in the story. Besides the conversation of the grandparents, the use of flashback, the use of description of the tragedy greatly heightens the pathos in the story.
