...e and needy woman was very obvious. The role of the woman being the caregiver, and the mournful desperate alone female is very present in this poem. The very gender specific language gives away her desperation. This Chicana writing is from the feminist perspective of the Latino culture. Other themes in this poem are myth and storytelling. These are also typical woman roles. All in all, I really felt her poem. Her topics were relevant to our culture and I appreciated her honesty. The poem we read by Jimmy Santiago Baca was a male’s perspective of some injustices and, well, choices. “Choices” really struck me hard. I felt that he was so deeply hurt by the idea of his friend selling out and leaving behind their old way of life. He could not believe that he had lost his buddy to the mainstream corporate world, when they had dreamed together what the future would hold. The fact that this friend is now an acquaintance was such a low blow to him. Also, the guilt that his friend obviously felt by making the decision to take the job made things even worse. I felt that this poem dealt with some different issues. Because the typical American Dream is to have the 2.5 kids and the white collar job, it was such an insult to Baca for his friend to want to trade in their way of life, and their dreams and culture because he is not living in his home country any more. Finally, Gary Soto’s “Mexican’s Begin Jogging” has a humor and sarcasm to it, that we haven’t really seen so far in this class.
