...he waste. Many of the reactors are on the east coast, and moving the waste across the country could prove to be difficult. But the Nuclear Energy Institute insures they are safe, saying “The nuclear energy industry has carried out more than 3000 shipments of used nuclear fuel over 1.7 million miles of U.S. highways and railroads since 1964. No nuclear fuel container has ever leaked or cracked in any way.” But the bottom line is Yucca Mountain has been the subject of many studies over the years, and if it’s concluded that having Yucca Mountain as the nation's first long-term geologic repository is safe, then I would support it. Nuclear Reactor accidents are probably the one area of concern that scares people the most. The general public is afraid of nuclear power plants exploding or leaking radioactivity into the air. Now even though these incidents aren’t exactly common, Nuclear Reactors have had some major accidents. The two most notorious accidents are the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl reactors. At Three Mile Island, one of the reactors lost its coolant, causing a partial meltdown which released radioactive water and gases. The average dose of radioactivity absorbed by the community was very small, but some people in Pennsylvania still were worried and felt the need to at least temporarily go somewhere else. This made me think that the general public doesn’t really trust nuclear plants and that radiation exposures scares people greatly. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said, “There is no doubt that the accident at Three Mile Island permanently changed both the nuclear industry and the NRC. Public fear and distrust increased, NRC's regulations and oversight became broader and more robust, and management of the plants was scrutinized more carefully,” (Nuclear Regulatory Commission). On the other hand, the accident at Chernobyl in the Ukraine really gave people something to worry about. An explosion at the plant released radioactive material into the air that eventually spread across much of Europe. 31 People ...
