HUI O HEI

480538-8 Gabe Lemons Ger 191 Hui o Hei (the prophecy) In the dim light before sunrise the boy is awoken by his father. Jaco: Elias wake up you gotta come see this! The boy rises wiping the sleep from his eyes and follows his father towards the back door of their Orchid Park home. The cool morning air chills his rosy cheeks as the door opens and before him the predawn sky is ablaze as Kilauea spews molten lava hundreds of feet towards the heavens. Elias stands in awe as Pele performs her entrancing dance. From this day forward his eyes are always drawn towards the fire…. Flash-forward a few months as Jaco drives the boy to school, (a small Waldorf pre-school/ kindergarten a few miles up the dirt road that winds through the new neighborhood 15 miles south of Hilo), the boy stares up at the sun hoping to catch a glimpse of the mystic dragon he believes lives there. His eyes begin to burn but no matter, the hypnotic pulsing of the light provides him inner nourishment others can’t absorb. It is from the sun and even more the water that the boy gains strength, tapping into the elements to fuel his powers. It is obvious even at this stage in his development that he possesses gifts far beyond the grasp of others. This separation is part of the conflict he experiences with others and it results in violent confrontations with others. At school he fights daily, mostly with himself as he tries to contain his frustration with the other children. This continues through the following years and at one point he is suspended indefinitely after inciting a riot during which he managed to batter a majority of his 2nd grade classmates. There were boundaries to his fury as his loyalty to his allies meant that they were protected always, like a free ticket to walk within the eye of the storm. This most recent explosion gave him two weeks at home as the school contemplated how to deal with him and if they even could. During this time he explores the jungle near his new home (a small 2 bedroom house at the end of Elm St. on Hilo’s East side) as he slides through the thick vines and Pakeana trees he comes across a WWII military bunker. As he climbs deeper into the cold concrete he finds the carcass of a blue and orange bird. He sits down next to it and wonders if there isn’t something he can do to bring it back to life. It is then that he remembers a spell that his mother taught him in order to heal his injured ankle. So he sits down and begins to focus on his healing powers and as he whispers the words into the birds ear it begins writhing and pecking at his hands before flying out the opening of the bunker.
