Humans entering the society will forfeit their own natural freedoms in order to gain protection from society. Society can help protect man from a number of his fears through communal living, a law system, and by having a police to enforce those laws. The single man seems almost powerless against other men or nature; however, a group of many men will have exponentially greater chances of survival. These apparent increased chances help alleviate fear. Fear is why man entered society to begin with., Feat then becomes the basis for all of man’s actions. He enters into the protection of society so that he may be able to save himself from hardships that may affect him during life; however, in an attempt to solve the issues man have with what could possibly happen after he dies, man will then turn to religion. Hobbes says the basis of all religion in fear. There are many government s in the world today that will use religion as their basis of power. Fear then becomes their basis of power. People will give their sovereignty to a theocracy because they fear the wrath of the god they worship. Religious figures are then given political power due to the fact that they have the closest relationship with god. In many religions, a faceless, omnipotent god will be the only way to say oneself from the unknown after-life and fear of what hardships may come in life. Without fear of man, nature, and of the governing body above him, man would be left to run wild through out the world. If material possession and life itself could not be threatened in any way shape or form, man would be left to anarchy. If man were able to live peacefully in the world without society and government, words like anarchy would not receive such a negative connotation from everyone in the world. The complete abence of government (anarchy) is seen as the epitome of the stage of great chaos. Without government or society, the world would crumble into disorder. An example of man resorting back to his state of nature, kill or be killed, instincts occurred. On February 13, 2004 New York City lost electrical power for over a day. Were man able to live in a peaceful society without the fear of punitive action, everyone would have simply went about their business and went home to wait for power to come back; however, without fear, man is irrational and brutish.
