Linton lacks spirit,but he is, as Nelly says, kind,honourable and trustfully loving husband to Catherine . And the most important thing is Linton is a landowner and is socially superior to Heathcliff . This shows Catherine's assertion of social privilege. But Catherine tries to lead two lives: an ontological commitment to Heathcliff and another phenomenal relationship to Linton .
