In eukaryotes, the compartments in chich transcription and thranslation occur are different. transcription takes place ine the nuleus, whereas translation takes place in the cytoplasm. This means that transcription and trans-lation cannot occur simultaneously as they do in proka-ryote. Instead, transcription has to finish, then the transcript has to make its way into the cytoplasm before translation can begin. This allows an interval between transcription and translation known as the posttrans-criptional phase. Many events peculiar to eukaryotes occur in this period. In this and the next two chapter, we will deal with these posttranscriptional events.
