D Day Landings.

...was going on. Then, rows of soldiers in front of us fell, dead on the floor. ‘Get down!’ I shouted. Bob and I dropped down. The Germans were already firing at us. It is quieter than expected and the boat journey was very calm… The firing stopped. They were only reloading. We had just enough time if we exited the boat swiftly. Shots narrowly missed our helmets. Bob was lying in the sand next to me. Shouting over the noise, he told me, ‘We have to stick together, don’t stray to far from me and keep low!’ I struggled to hear him over all of the whistling bullets racing above us. Bob is taking charge and keeping me out of trouble… We ran through the smoke, which enshrouded us like a thick blanket. I turned to speak to Bob, but he was gone. I would have to look for him later. I ran to a commander to receive orders. As I reached him, there was a large explosion, blowing off the commander’s leg. I expected there to be more casualties. There have only been cuts and bruises so far though… Warm blood spattered on my face like gruel hitting a bowl. He screamed and cried like a child. I decided I couldn’t do anything to save him and eventually his screams died down. I carried on along the beach, stopping every now and then to hide behind a breakwater to avoid the shots. The smell in the air was that of rancid meat. Lovely scenery. And the constant floral smell of the endless fields… I stood up from behind a breakwater and got hit. A shot right in the shoulder; not fatal, thank god. I rapidly tied a bandage around my arm and got back up to fight, despite the excruciating pain searing throughout my arm. A huge explosion blew the bloodied sand and water high into the air. A large collection of limbs levitated, following the sand and water. We might all go out for a drink later and celebrate our success so far… Men screamed for help and others cried out ‘Mother!’ I felt as though I was betraying them by ignoring their cries. Running along the beach; I could almost taste the fear and gunpowder as the bullets narrowly missed my, already injured, arm. I leaped behind another breakwater as a round skimmed my head. I sighed with relief and carried on sprinting up the beach. The sand on the beach is beautifully golden and clean… I glanced up and saw a blaze of light emit from the cold, grey concrete block at the top of the sandbank.
