Before all this, people use to work freely in their leisure time, but when modern civilization took place, people work in factories where “condition are far worst than that of beasts” (36). Now how is that an easier lifestyle? Modern civilization seems to have gave India new problems, including new diseases where more and more doctors are needed to find cures (36). It is hard to believe with all of the positives that modern civilization brought to Indians over looked the negatives where the people did not pay attention to the new hardships, but the new “leisures” brought to them. Another factor of modern civilization is its essence of being irreligious. It focuses more on money and luxury rather than religion. Gandhi states that people from Europe who embrace modern civilization are weak, no courage nor physical strength (37). India was turning away from God and started heading toward industry and enterprise (42). Though religion has taught people to be passive towards worldly pursuits, the people of India were turning away (42). Once the interests of trade were focused on India, other countries were ready to not only do business with, but possibly control India’s markets. Europe saw them as weak, uncivilized people thus feeling the need to modernize the Indian people. When introduced, the Indians accepted the charge of being a lesser country (39). Some people wanted India to grow in industry and enterprise, while others felt that European countries’ lifestyle must leave. But who is to blame? Gandhi states that Indians have handed over India to Europe without a fight (39). Indians have accepted European lifestyle whether they agreed with it or not.
