...e the strong from the weak. Miller’s decision to name his play in such a way was effected by three main things. One was the character’s own opinion about the Salem Witch Trials. Events in the book that took place in the play, such as battles between characters, helped to make Salem like a hard test of which character would snap under the pressure first. Finally, the beliefs of the Puritan religion affected how the play developed into such a high heat situation. The characters in The Crucible affected the choice made by Miller to name the play in such a way. Tituba resembled both definitions of the word crucible. After Tituba is caught in the woods dancing with the other girls she is questioned to find out if she was a witch. Rev Parris melted her down very easily, and she would be considered one of the people that did not pass a crucible test, she would be seen as too weak. Elizabeth Procter would be the complete opposite. Although she had her execution postponed she never gave in to confessing that she was a witch.
