... Amongst the fruits an orange is see, makes you wonder if the orange was put there on purpose and it is not seen as a fine fruit. At the front of the table there are opened oysters and peach etc which is inviting to the eye. Also the freshly peeled fruit makes it seem more real. The way in which the fruit is peeled is playing with our eyes. Has the peeled fruit not been shown it would have been a perfect picture almost like escaping from the rules of art? Alongside the peel the eye catches the knotted cloth which represents problems and lovers entwining. Although it is as if pious and godly people are indulging in the exoticness of the food as it must have been placed there by saints. As the picture was done in 1643 it must have a poor/rich comparison, making this available to the rich as the poor could not afford such luxury. There is a dark curtain in the background and the dark wall has waves on it giving it an illusion of water flowing therefore the oysters and prawns fit in with the waves of water. Also the leaves represent outdoor. The artist has shown a mixture of nature with outdoor nature. The layout of colour is arranged purposefully. Yellow is in the middle, with different shades of red on either side. Red is seen as a danger and hints at poison as the picture is just too perfect.
