...unched in the face and his head goes back like it got hit with a wrecking ball, very exaggerated. When cut with a sword, they just fall. I think they could still fight unless it was a Black Knight in the Holy Grail moment, where his limbs were cut off, but even he was ready to bite at the ankles of his worthy foe. I digress. I need to analyze. Kurosawa definitely had it all together in the casting. The boys, looked the part of brothers, and even had the look of their personalities. Where as Taro and Jiro were warlike and had the edgier, meaner look, Saburo had a gentler image, he looked like a pacifist, if one ever looked like one. Lord Hidetora looked the old man, the tired old man, who ends up going crazy, just to look at him looks like he’s just going to go mad. The wife of Taro, Lady Kaede, looked like a woman who you don’t want to cross, like she will have you balls in her fist and squeeze if you don’t go her way, where as Lady Sué, Jiro’s wife, looks a very quiet, compassionate woman, one who will not cross her men and knows her place in society, behind her man rather than beside him (not my belief, just what I know of Asian Culture). The jester, Kyoami, looks and plays the fool very well. He doesn’t look like the rest, very wide eyed, very energetic. He looks like a kid, who has discovered that a joke makes people laugh, and obviously tries very hard to make his Lord happy and entertained, with those jokes. The one thing I don’t find in the film in an inherent thoughtfulness. I see it, but it seems like the dramatic motions and mannerisms they act out are what convey that. That could be as a result that we don’t understand how they think or feel, or what they look like when they portray those emotions, or let thought thoughts influence their body language. This is a totally different culture, and not one we are very similar with. All it seems is that to make the movie work, those dramatic pauses, louder raised voices, and exaggerated motions are what give the movie its thought, its feel. Another part is that we don’t hear the speaking in our own language, we must interpret those tones and highs and lows in the voices and match them in the words scrolling across the screen. We may right on, we may be completely off in the pairing. Our sentence structure of Subject, Predicate, and Object, are completely different, and the difference is not just in the Mandarin based to English language, its Latin based to English as well.
