Greed Grows Worse: The Good Earth
...use it is too big. Kino’s greed takes control of his conscience then disaster strikes. After killing a thief, Kino takes his family and runs away. Now, he is so caught up in the price of the pearl, he does not realize how much danger he is putting his family in. While in the forest, Kino spots trackers, who were sent to find him and his family. Instead of giving himself up, Kino’s only son dies when one of the trackers mistakes the boy for a coyote. Finally, when Kino realizes what the pearl has done to him, he throws the pearl back into the water for some other fisherman to find. The Good Earth shows how the ramifications of greed force people to forget what is right in their lives. Wang Lung’s uncle is a good example of people who will do anything to survive. While Wang Lung was in another city trying to earn a living, his uncle ransacks their house and ruins all of Wang Lung’s work, even though the two are related. Wang Lung thought about punishing his uncle some how, but instead, remembers what he has always been taught; respect for elders and relatives. However, Wang Lung becomes very successful and starts to become greedy himself. When he meets Lotus, he cannot stop having a relationship with her. Then, he wants to give Lotus a present, so, Wang Lung takes the pearls he let O-lan keep, and gives them to Lotus. After he realizes what he has done wrong, he can not forgive himself because O-lan has died. At the end, Wang Lung is a very rich, old man with a family. However...
