But as the political stand off with the British became a secession issue, a great issue split the future nation. Slavery, a southern necessity, both social and economic, threatened the unity of our nation. A nation that would one day be the greatest the world had ever known. During the development of the thirteen colonies, diversity set .... White and Hazard decided to cut out the middleman and go directly to the source. They had heard that in Europe there was a man named George Crane who, on his iron furnace property in Wales, was said to have discovered the secret of how to keep anthracite hot. They would go to Crane and learn from him. What they discovered was that it was not Crane but his Welsh assistant David Thomas who had perfected the method of heating anthracite and keeping it hot. Hazard traveled to Wales and got Crane's permission to talk to Thomas. A married man with several sons, a wife and widowed mother to support, at first he was reluctant to come to America. Thomas agreed to leave Wales only after his wife...
