Affirmative Action
... applying for jobs nowadays that they have to rank higher than others on aptitude tests to be considered equal. Many people that come from the majority are losing their jobs to a member of the minority or not receiving promotions just because the business feels as if they must meet a certain quota. A factor is that affirmative action causes someone more qualified for a job in the majority to not be hired ahead of someone less qualified in the minority. Certain standards are lowered for those in the minority just so they can get into that certain work field, and this is unfairness. An example of this would be “a white, male firefighter was discriminated against for being a white male. He scored only 83% on the aptitude test: he needed a 85. But, women and minorities were required to score only 70% to qualify.” Minorities say they need affirmative action to be seen as an equal in an interview for a job. This right, but it allows them to have lower scores than another employee but still be able to obtain the position. It is not equal treatment when the worst, who is not right for the job, is chosen over the best only because of a right, instead of their qualifications. It is not fair for one individual to get the rough end of the deal, especially if they are more skilled, just because they are in the majority so that certain statistics can be obtained within the business. Affirmative action doesn’t prevent discrimination, but it causes more by reversing roles. Another problem that results from affirmative actions are that it limits certain individuals from being accepted into college or receiving certain scholarships due to universities trying to increase the number of minority students enrolled. Some universities have even gone as far as to drop the requirement for a person in the minority’s GPA or SAT scores to greater their chances of being accepted. For example, “At University of Virginia, SAT scores for whites must be a 630, for Asians, a 520, Hispanics a 600, and blacks a 550”. Students know the requirements they must meet to get into a certain university. Someone who has worked harder during school should not miss out on an opportunity just so the number of minorities in a university will increase, especially if they did not make as good of grades. Every student, of color, sex, age or religion should have the exact same requirements in order to be accepted. One could also speculate that a student of the minority who got accepted on a lower standard would be more likely to fail out because they are not qualified to make the grade. Another example of school lowering their standards would be at the University of Oklahoma Medical College. ...
