Underlying Problem: Large corporations are shifting their responsibility to care for their employees to the state. Purpose/Background Washington State taxpayers are paying for the health care of Wal-Mart employees. Wal-Mart is one of the world’s largest corporations and over 20 percent of its employees are benefiting from state subsidized health coverage. It was discovered that the employees receiving state health care were in fact full-time employees, showing that Wal-Mart is a “low-cost employer” and won’t even cover the medical expenses of its full-time workers.
