The Great Changes in China

...y for the Games of the Olympiad in 2008. The news excited every Chinese and really aroused my pride in being a Chinese. Several months later, China's accession into WTO, an event of great significance in the whole world trade history held international attention again. The World Trade Organization¡¯s operations are based on the rules of the market economy and the majority of its members are countries with market economy mechanism. Before 2001 China had always been treated unfairly in international trade in that it was regarded as a non-market economy country. However, over 20 years¡¯ reforms and opening-up have already established a market economy system in China. Hence, China¡¯s WTO accession means other countries¡¯ approval to our market reforms. A look at the domestic achievements would find changes impressive. China's economy has boomed and grew rapidly since reforms at an annual industrial production growth rate of 11.6 percent between 1979 and 2000. The success of China's first manned space flight, a dramatic event, told the world the capability of scientific research of China. Apart from the economic and scientific development, changes can be felt in people¡¯s daily life and social environment. One example: twenty years ago few people could imagine that we can have varieties of vegetables during winters, let alone that computers would become an instrument and bring us great conveniences. In addition to the wide use of computers, it is attributed to the expansion of international trade and globalization, which makes the purchase of goods from every corner of the world possible.
