They had, as the year before, been invited to Mrs. Henne-Falcon´s birthday party and Francis feared for it. He is eminently afraid of the game „ Blind man’s buff“ (A Blind man’s buff is a play which one person is blindfolded, lights are turned off and the blindfolded one tries to catch the others) Francis did think of many excuses for not going to the party, he’s getting a cold, no that will not work, they will find out he’s malingering. He swears on the Bible and thinks that now all will be well, God will not let him down or allow him to break his oath. But nothing works out; his mother does not listen to his fear. She encourages him „There is nothing to be afraid of; there is nothing to be afraid of in the dark“she says. The brothers go to the party and still Francis thinks he will get away from the game that does not happen. Peter tries to save his younger brother from the game. He tries to appeal to that they play the game every year but no, it’s on the program. At last Peter tells Mrs.Henne-Falcon that Francis should not play „The dark makes him Jump so” he say’s “but that where not the right words, the only thing he is ingathering is the children starting to call Francis a coward. To be called a coward is something a boy can’t withstand and Francis says „Of course I will play“. The game begins; the brothers’ are both at the hiding side and Peter is going to be with his brother so he will not be afraid of the sounds in the dark.
