...he children to the movie. This animated film was very popular for both children and adults for a number of reasons. The main reason was that both children and adults could go to the film and enjoy it on two different levels. The children could identify with the likeable characters and the reference to all the fairy tales and the childish humour of the film. Where as adults would also identify with the characters more on an emotional level that the children would not be able to identify with yet. With the adult humour there were carefully made jokes that only adults would understand. Usually the hero is handsome and dashing, where as Shrek is more the anti hero. He wants his swamp back to get rid of all the other fairytale creatures that are there, he is doing this only for himself but in turn becomes a hero to all the creatures for helping them out. Princess Fiona doesn’t act like a Princess as she burps, fights and turns into an ogre at nightfall. Representations of Love The main theme of the movie is to love people for who they are and not what they look like, to look deeper than just the surface of a person, “that, things are more than they appear”. The second theme is that is it doesn’t matter where you are from or what you look like with determination you can achieve anything if you set your mind to it. The third main theme is highlighting the importance of friendship, and how you can meet people in the strangest places. Relationships throughout the movie challenge what we would know as being normal such as an ogre befriending a donkey, a princess falling in love with an ogre and a donkey falling in love with a dragon.
