It is extremely important for Dante’s hell to have structure. Without it, the reader would find himself in a confusing world of random torture. The organization of Hell relates to the severity of the sinners sin, and is ruled by god’s justice. Many of the tortures may seem overly cruel to people who only read one canto of the book, such as those who commit suicide are trapped in a forest of flaming trees, or gays trapped in a land of burning ground, but once the entire book is read, the organization of Dante’s hell through divine justice is truly seen. On the gates of hell it is stated that God created hell to punish sins. This is done in perfect proportion in which there are no special circumstances, unlike many of today’s societies punishments.
