Discipleship Coursework
...daueus, Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him. None of the disciples where perfect Matthew was a social outcast because he was a tax collector, tax collectors hated by the Jewish people. Peter, Andrew, James and John had little effect on the Jewish society because they were all hard working fishermen. James and John seemed to suffer from a bad tempers, Jesus named them ‘Sons of thunder’. Simon Was a member of the zealot party, a violent group which fought against the roman occupation of Israel. As we see none of the disciples had a big effect on society all being hard workers and none being very rich or powerful. From this Mark shows us that all types of people can be disciples of Christ. We see that the disciple where just human and of course like humans can make mistakes, the most obvious example of this was Peter’s denial. The night before Jesus’ death he told the rest of the disciple that they would fall away and that peter would disown him three times “before the cock crows twice you yourself will disown me three times” Just as Jesus predicted the disciples fell away and Peter disowned him three times. “Then everyone deserted him and fled”. Jesus chose his disciples for a reason firstly to be trained for the task of sharing Jesus’ mission, to be the first group of followers who would bring others into the community, to be the ones to continue Jesus’ mission after he had gone. In the story ‘The disciples spread the Gospel’; The disciples were instructed to spread the gospel/preach that people should repent, drive out evil sprits and anoint sick people. “The went out and preached that people should repent. They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them”. In Mark’s Gospel it shows true discipleship is not something that can be done in a half hearted way. To Christians, It means giving all that they have in the service of God and of other people. This clearly explained in the story of the widow at the treasury in 12: 41 -4. The meaning of this story was that all the people gave money out of their wealth but the widow gave out of her poverty which meant the most. “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth but she gave out of her poverty”. We learn a...
