...information flows in the logical manner. The context, background and rules of the game are presented in the logical manner with one following other and one information that develops concept following the other that is based on the concept. The purpose of both the manual is to make the user understand the game rule and interface. These gave has been developed for a user who has access to consoles for playing them, but just having a console doesn’t make these games playable and enjoyable. A player should also have the basic understanding of set of rules for the game and also understand the objective and mission of the game. To do this one should carefully read and understand the game manual. A good manual is a manual that is able to make the reader understand the principles of the game. Both the manual under study in this essay clearly states what a player has to accomplish, while playing the game. Matter of fact both of these manual developer have taken the purpose as their main priority while developing the manuals. Hence, both of them are successful in fulfilling their purpose. Audiences, so whom are these games meant for. As it has been mentioned earlier, these games are meant for person aged 13 or more. But researches have shown the main audience group for these types of games are children in their early to middle teens. So what do teenager like? Are these manuals successful in fulfilling the likes of teenager? Are these manuals really targeted towards their teenage audiences? These are the main question that has to be answered. Well, both of the manuals certainly have been prepared by lot of hard work, but the Checkered Flag manual is the one that can be related with teenage likes. Researches have shown teenagers really prefer reading things that have images embedded on them. An image centred books like comic books has always been a teenagers’ favourite book. On other hand they hate reading thick books with lot of pages and no pictures. The manual developed for Checkered Flag is a one page poster sized manual with lots of pictures so they really prefer reading that manual, but the manual prepared for soccer kid though has been written in simple English, but has too many pages and no images to capture teenagers’ attention. “Information and loads of them”. Well a manual certainly should be informative; it certainly should convey the message through and let the user know what it is meant for. But, is that enough? Certainly not. Every bit of information in an informative document should be in logical manner so that their presence makes some sense. The two manual under scrutiny in this essay certainly have lots of information on them, but one of them have their information presented in logical manner whereas other one has them in random manner. Soccer kid manual starts with the back ground and general introduction of the game, then it goes to character, and then it goes to his objective followed by his skills and control. So a reader is never confused while reading them, and one piece of information leads to the other one, whereas, in the Checkered Flag manual, the information has been presented in the random fashion. And the every bit of information presented in any section doesn’t correlate with information leading or following that segment. If I were to buy one of the two Atari games under study in this essay by reading the manual, I would definitely go for the Soccer Kid. By buying the soccer kid a user ensures that he doesn’t have to work really hard to understand his motive, know the set of rules and his aids to use accomplish his motive. This enables him start enjoying the game in really short period of time. Imagine yourself, buying a new Macintosh and not knowing how to use it. Well you would certainly benefit, if you get a free Mac tutorial with your purchase, but other wise it certainly of no use. It is same for video games. Well both the games we are talking about are good games, they certainly are enjoyable, and give you equal opportunity to test your skills, but while one of them comes with an easy to use tutorial the other comes with a tutorial, that requires you to take another tutorial to understand that tutorial. The soccer kid manual is easy to understand, the information flows logically, the text are well sized, and the information are interrelated. Whereas the Checkered Flag has all the information jumbled up, the text size are really small, the information does not interrelate so it is hard to understand. And the user has to read the manual again and again to understand it, certainly a waste of time. The way both of manual are presented in the web has left the room for lot of improvements. First of all it is really hard to find a particular game in and its manual while browsing the web. It certainly took me lot of time to find the particular manual and print from the Atari website. Moreover, the manuals has been saved page by page in the website, so in order to read the manual user has to click individual page, click them enlarge the...
