...ties come to America to experience the freedoms that America is so proud of, and if we discriminate against other cultures that come into this country, then we are simply proving to the world how hypocritical Americans can be. It is important that as a country of such high standards that we can live up to those standards, and stay true to them. On September 11, 2001, an event occurred that forever changed the lives of every American. Two airliners, in an act of terrorism, were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, and left the country shattered in pieces. Along with the buildings the feeling of safety and hope in every American collapsed, and was filled with an uneasy feeling of hopelessness and despair. After this tragedy occurred, racial profiling against Arabs, Indians, and Sikhs dramatically increased. Many Arabs were pulled aside in airports, train stations, and bus stations, and people of all different nationalities refused to share transportation as long as an Arab was with them. With this single event, racial profiling hit a different ethnic group in America even harder than before. Once things began to return a little bit closer to normal, yet another tragedy struck. In September of 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, and entire the Gulf Coast. The death toll is speculated to be in the thousands, while thousands more are still stranded (mostly on rooftops) while they await food, water, and rescue. Since New Orleans is predominately poor and African-American, many news officials have stoked the fires of racial profiling by stating that the reason why so many people are still stranded is because they are “poor, black people.” This has caused the NAACP and other various organizations to become “outraged at the governments’ lack of response to Hurricane Katrina.” Because of the large amount of looting that took place after Hurricane Katrina, the country also views the impoverished people of New Orleans as thieves; again, bringing into play the stereotype that African-American’s are criminals. Racial profiling is taking an enormous toll on America presently, because all of the citizens of New Orleans that have been looting are now spread throughout the country. There are many rumors that the victims and looters will now increase crime all over the nation, and although no one would like to admit it, the fact of the matter is that the people of New Orleans are being strongly discrimin...
