According to The Encarta English Dictionary Online, mythology is a group of myths that belong to a particular people or culture and tell about their ancestors, heroes, gods and other supernatural beings, and history. I agree with the definition given by The Encarta English Dictionary Online which states that the Greeks, Romans, and many other ancient people had a rhyme or reason for everything they came in contact with, including the birth of the universe. From dusk till dawn the ancient people had a reason for everything their lives consisted of including the wind blowing, the stars at night, and most of all the creation of man. Mythology an Illustrated Encyclopedia states that mythologies are imaginative traditions about nature, history and destiny of the world, the gods, man, and society. I agree with the encyclopedia, mythology was a creation by the civilization to explain their surroundings and to show a moral reflection of their society. Without mythology most ancient people would have been lost. The stories of Homer and other famous poets helped strengthen some of Greek history as well as Greek Mythology. Homer’s The Iliad is a prime example of Greek Mythology and Greek history wrapped in one story. The poem contains a story of the Trojan War and the rage of Achilles that helped the Ancient Greeks discover their lost history during their “Dark Age.” That timeless, powerful poem still vividly conveys the horror and the heroism of men and gods wrestling with towering emotions and battling amidst devastation and destruction, as the tale moves inevitably to its terrifying, tragic conclusion. The story of the Trojan War, with some mythological concepts, helped the Greeks discover a part of their history that was almost forgotten. The gods were similar to mortals; they had love affairs, struggles for power, and in some cases they died. Gods had the same frailties and shortcomings as mortals. Zeus, the sky god, is the most popular and most recognized god in ancient mythology. According to mythology, the sky god Zeus had easy access to the women of the world and took full advantage of it. Also, his power as a supreme god made him difficult to resist. According to mythology Zeus had many lovers that where mortals therefore he had many children who became demi-gods. With the gods similar to mortals it gave the ancient people comfort that they can relate their own troubles to the trouble times that the gods experienced, which gave the ancient people more of a reason to worship the gods.
