The Ku Klux Klan can have parades to show their hatred and it is protected by the first amendment, it should be no different for someone to be able to burn the flag to show their disdain. The flag is flown to show patriotism, it is one’s fundamental liberty to do so, just as it should be one’s fundamental liberty to burn it. The flying of the Confederate Flag over public buildings became an issue in 2000, with the flying of this flag over South Carolina’s State Capitol. The Confederate Flag was the flag of the Southern States during the Civil War, and is seen by many as a symbol of racism and bigotry. However many people in the Southern states also view the flag as a symbol of the Confederacy, which they believe was a noble effort even though it failed. Many believe it honors the veterans of the Civil War, the history and independent spirit of the South; it honors the memory of their ancestors that fought and died for the South. The Confederate Flag is an essential piece of history for the South, with symbolic meaning, positive as well as negative, but it should still be able to be flown on public buildings. It is a part of the history and culture for the South, if the Ten Commandments and other religious paraphernalia can be on display in the Supreme Court building as long as all religions are represented then the Confederate flag should be able to fly beside the American Flag and state flag to represent the Southern pride.
